Amber Lewis

Born in Brisbane, Australia, Amber Lewis trained at Ecole Studios and The Washington School of Ballet. As a student, she won a bronze medal at the World Ballet Competition in 2011. Amber Lewis danced with The Washington Ballet, Ballet Arizona, Hong Kong Ballet before joining Northern Ballet in 2022.

Amber Lewis’ repertoire highlights include Kitri in Don Quixote, Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, The Sylph in La Sylphide, Alice in ALICE (in wonderland), Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, and Gamzatti in La Bayadere.

Amber Lewis has also danced numerous works by George Balanchine. Among them are principal roles in Rubies, Emeralds, Square Dance, Western Symphony, Serenade, and The Four Temperaments.

She has also danced leading and featured roles in works by Alexei Ratmansky, Justin Peck, Christopher Bruce, Twyla Tharp, Edwaard Liang, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Alejandro Cerrudo.

Where were you born and raised?

Brisbane, Australia.

At what age did you start dancing?

At about 2 1/2 years old. I so badly wanted to be with my older sister in the studio that her teacher reluctantly allowed me to join the class.

Where did you train?

I began my ballet training in Australia before continuing my studies at The Washington School of Ballet.

The Washington Ballet, Ballet Arizona & Hong Kong Ballet. 

Career/training highlights

My first principal role in a full length ballet was Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. This ballet will always be special to me. Another highlight was performing the principal in Emeralds and Rubies from George Balanchine’s Jewels.

What do you like most about being a dancer? 

The places my career has taken me and the wonderful people I’ve met along the way.

How do you like to relax?

An evening with a good novel, a long bath, and a glass of wine.
